When it comes to keeping healthy, fit and toned I have always maintained that something is always better than nothing. And that something should always be done as intense and challenging as possible. Simply put because your body and your health adapts to whatever you demand of it. Or if you so prefer to think of it as, what you give it.

And now, if you are one of the many that feel like I just do not have the time needed to stay healthy in body (and mind), I would very much like to, but I just dont have time so instead i´ll just sit here for 5 hours watching tv until it is good night baby and I fall asleep.

Well, you know. Binge watching game of thrones is perfectly fine. I do that too :).

But you should know that science has proven me right on more then one occasion. The latest is the findings that as little as 3 intense minutes per day actually improves health and body composition in a noticeable way for otherwise out of shape and unhealthy living people.

But no, to get it out of the way, I am not going to tell you to limit your active life style to 3 intense minutes 7 days per week. But instead, what I am saying is that if you are really out of time and energy in your daily life, dedicate at least 3 minutes to going ape shit crazy intense with your body. And after 10 years of doing so (even better if you start training more over time, perhaps even training like me and my gf do ) you will thank me.

Even better is if you keep in mind to take your daily walks, lift challenging weights 4 to 5 days per week and break up your sedentary work every hour for a few minutes of physical activity, and so forth. Because that is what all of us needs for a healthy body and mind, today and 20 years from now. But it is also perfectly clear that something is way, way better then nothing, and especially so if you make it something on a daily basis. Even just a few intense minutes.

Workout inspiration

While doing my regular chest workout recently, it just felt way to good and kick ass, so for fun i ended up throwing in 3 super sets once i was finished consisting of hanging leg raises and chins. And while that of course have nothing to do with working your chest muscles, sometimes, mixing it up for nothing but pure fun and additional challenge is the small, out of place stuff, that keeps us fit and toned and healthy for decades upon decades instead of just a few months per year or in a far away distant past time.

4 warm up sets, i normally do 5 reps during my warm up sets, but i am enjoying switching minor stuff up for the time being, so right now my warm up consists of 10 reps per set.
5 working sets, 8-14 reps. As heavy i can go while keeping it intense and strict. The amount of reps is as many as i can do in that set, i simply dont have the strength for one more repetition, at least not that time and in that set. And the range of 8 to 14 is a good measurement for if the weight is to heavy or to light.

5 set x as many reps as i could muster, 8 - 12 seemed to have been the range. I haven't done incline in quite a while so this too is a nice change of pace for me. And these two exercises are really all i need right now for my pecs. I am neither looking to improve my strength or size, for me it´s all about keeping fit and toned and healthy and if possible improve my toned state a little bit over the future years. But reality is, i am really happy with my current health and form, and pecs for me doesnt seem to need more to maintain or slowly improve strength and size.

Hanging leg raises, super set with chins

3 set of each, around 10 reps per set for hanging leg raises and 15 to 20 reps per set for chins.
Well, i was pretty dead tired on the final set so perhaps it only ended up being 12 or 13 reps, i dont really remember right now as i am writing this, but this is after all for your enjoyment, to serve as a slight workout inspiration thingy. Or to perhaps inspire you to start working out, even if that is as little as 3 intense minutes per day.

All rounded off with a 20 minute intense hiit mma workout. Nothing fancy, just me kicking and punching on a big floor standing sandbag while keeping a constant fluid movement going with my feets - and yes, just like i lift weights, i (and my gf) do this all out, intense and challenging. Just the way you should train too.

And not to forget, the day started with a beautiful 20 to 30 minute morning walk outdoors once one to two cups of coffee had been devoured as the rejuvenating life saver that it is :)..

small but significant steps to better health and longevity



Other small ways to live a healthier life that rejuvenates your health and age no matter your actual biological age and current shape is cocoa as well as daily walks outdoors, as early in the day as possible. As well as that already hinted at morning coffee.

Including pure cocoa in your daily food will actually help in keeping your brain all healthy and young, decades younger then what your current biological age is. Cocoa also helps out with your blood pressure and insulin sensitivity.
All things that is also affected by you taking daily walks ( 20 minute walks as early in the day as possible is all you need). The reason why i say, as early in the day as possible, is simple, going outside early in the day has been linked to lower amount of body fat and thus, it will help you not only with your natural sleep cycle, but also aid you in keeping fit and toned. And of course, while no one should spend 8 hours per day bbq in the sun. Daily sunlight is good for us. Body and mind alike.

And that old saying, body and mind. It really is true and the more we learn about healthy habits vs unhealthy habits, the more true it becomes.

People that keep fit and active, working out hard with weights and cardio and choosing to eat healthy, week in week out can still be sad and they can still be made to hurt emotionally and intellectually, and they can still get sick and die prematurely. But keeping active and healthy makes the impact of bad experiences and age itself, far less then if you do not work out hard.

And not only is lifting weights, doing martial arts, walking and running healthy for your body, it also keeps your mind young. Warding off not just obesity, but also age related decline in mind and brain. And yes, sun light and healthy eating do the same, and today we do know that if you keep a healthy body, your mind will also be healthier then it would have been with a less healthy life style. And vice versa. In fact, a healthy life style is healthy even for the planet, which means that a healthy person is healthy for all around as well. (reference: Nature.com, published journal )

Finally. Keeping fit is not for a certain age group. No matter your age, no matter when you start working out and eating healthy, your health and your body always improves, and so does your mind. So, if you are looking for ways to rejuvenate yourself and possibly even turn the clock back with quite a few years ( biologically speaking you can turn the clock back several decades in many aspects of your body and mind ) and to make the rest of your life as good as humanly possible. Then, eating healthy and working out hard day in day out for the rest of your life is the very best way forward.

Outside the sun and the moon are both painting a very vivid and clear blue sky, sharing and moving across the very same canvas in broad daylight.
The light from the rising sun is sharp and beautiful today, perhaps not so much for a classically schooled portrait photographer, but the way it illuminates the branches and leafs, all the frosty still life caught in the breath of approaching winter.
There is only one simple word crafted to properly describe the natural scenery that lay unfolded before my eyes this morning.

    Health & fitness is created and maintained together. Feeding each other in this enduring, lifelong symbiosis no matter if our focus is our muscles strength, our heart health, cellular health, biological age, or the amount and size of our skeletal muscle mass,. Joint health and bone mass, hormonal functions, cardiovascular health, body fat levels, gut health, and even our brain are all intricately linked together.






    Fitness & health, body, and mind remain a perpetual cause and consequence system, where each individual aspect within our bodies affects and in turn, gets affected by all of the others in various degrees.

    But is healthy food habits really just about the nutrition our food constitutes and the health & fitness impact that nutrition carries with it?

    Some will say that this is all there is to our food choices, and plenty of good nutritional coaches do treat food and nutrition just like that. And that is an ok choice to do. Ok, but also lackluster in its view on the scientific ecosystem that is food and health, people and planet. Yes, as a personal trainer, and nutritional coach and Styrka Master coach mysef, I can not agree at all with that narrow, and incomplete view on health, nutrition and fitness.

    You see, eating healthy food is a staple in our personal fitness, and health, that is a given.
    The nutritional make up of our food choices is a major pillar in human health and fitness, just as important as the amount of food which we are consuming. But a truly healthy fit life also account for the scientific impact of our choices on our planets health.



    After all, if our personal food and lifestyle choices contribute to breaking the health of our entire planet, then we are unavoidably going to harm the health of ourselves since a healthy, sustainable society and planet is essential to the life long health and fitness progression of us all. As individuals, and a society.


    Hence todays question pitting good ol potatoes vs rice and the amount of water, and climate, and planetary impact these 2 healthy food staples causes. And just why 'small' stuff like this should matter to you.

    Well, we can not scientifically deduct every little thing with 100% certainty as far as Covid-19 goes right now. It is still a situation that is too recent, and adaptive to conclude some things with absolute certainty.

    So much so that Tobacco smoking is perhaps the biggest single influencer on a human beings mutational burden, usually adding anywhere between 1,000 to 10,000 mutations per cell inside of the human body. In the end, being a major driver of various cancer forms and fatally damaged lungs. But, the human body is amazing at recovering from almost all forms of injuries and health issues once we start making healthier choices a regular thing.







    And now, a brand new 2020 study is shining light on just how well a typical smokers damaged lungs will recover once that smoker chooses to stop their unhealthy smoking habits.

    One of planet Earth´s most unique land-living animals still roaming about in the wild also happens to be one of the cutest and most enchanting, and gentle colossuses that have ever existed.     I have talked about telomeres in years past, and fitness too obviously :).
    But such is the world of fitness, science, and health, it often revisits old "truths" and sometimes upends them because our knowledge has deepened, while new studies at other times will simply fortify and acknowledge what we already knew to be true.
    So what will happen today as we travel back to the world of that peachy sounding telomeres thingy that keeps wiggling its cute little tail inside of us? Let us find out.
    My Question:.
    For this particular study, published in European Heart Journal, Nov 2018, we´ll uncover what happens to the length of our telomeres when we do long distance endurance training, high-intensity sprint intervals, nothing at all or lift weights in a so-so way in the gym ( yeah, color me unimpressed by the strength plan in this study, but hold on to that thought as you read on because I will get back to the fairly inadequate strength training and why that too matters. ).
    The question, which option is the best for maintaining the length of our telomeres and what is the worst?.

    Nothing fancy or big worded to say today, I am just drinking some tasty fresh black coffee while various death metal songs keep pumping through my livingroom gear.
    Yes, what a glorious morning :).
    But while I am enjoying my morning routine, getting ready for the gym and my own workouts as well as the health and fitness regimes of today's PT clients I am also reading up on science and sustainability from around the world. And one of the pieces that stand out is a tonally laid-back piece by Swedish outlet DN. They spent the better part of a month or so following Swedish sustainability advocate Greta as she continues her quest to bring much-needed awareness to the sad state of the world and the essential, deep-rooted changes we as a species and global civilization urgently need to undertake.

    Time for a short one.
    Obesity is no friend of the bettering of our health and longevity.
    Just as how the old school act of serious bulking never did anyone's health and fitness levels any favors. And pointing this scientific reality out is not about fat shaming. It´s about helping the world and its individuals turn the tide toward better health, and better fitness. And doing so does not remove peoples individual right to pick whatever body size and fat percentage that they so prefer.
    My Question:.
    We already know that obesity ( and a fat powered high BMI ) increases unhealthy factors such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol. And it often increases depression, drowsiness and general sedentary choices. Which indirectly leads to worse health in numerous ways. But if a person with a high fat powered BMI is deemed healthy as far as those traditional markers are concerned is excess fat itself still bad?
    Put in another way, will a higher amount of excess body fat still lead to worse health even if your bloodwork turns out ok and you do not feel depressed and drowsy and you do hit the gym?.

    Yes, it is once again time for you to put your thinking cap on before you proceed without hesitation through the hallway of healthy fit wonders and science :).
    You already know that keeping fit and lifting your weekly weights and doing your daily cardio is nothing but a rejuvenating choice. It's good for your strength, duh.. It is wondrously good for your harty heart health, and it aids your cognitive and creative processes. It scientifically speaking lowers depression and tardy drowsiness. And if you have been keeping up with me over the years, you also know that keeping fit on a regular weekly basis also lowers your physical age by quite a noticeable margin too.
    But even small ordinary things like taking a daily walk carries with it a huge life long health and fitness impact.

    My Question:.
    What happens with our skeletal lean muscle mass for people above 70 years of age if they take a few thousand steps more or less per day for 2 weeks time?.

    Life itself is this majestic mirror world of brilliance and incompetence. Eternally merging and reflected, individually disengaged yet perfectly synchronized and attached to each other and everything else.

    Like the leaf that finds itself stranded on the wayward peaks of a stormy ocean. They are each others counterpart, yet entirely different. Individual objects, entwined and interconnected. Disengaged and perfectly unique.

    And today, there´s officially a full-blown Autumn song playing out there in nature. Gorgeous and sunny, on a Sunday =). Wind free, except for the tiniest of breeze that you can almost not see or feel as it slowly makes it way through the crown of leaves that towers above.

    But it is, none the less, Autumn.
    The colors of the trees reveal it. The pale blue September moon that hangs high up in the middle of the day is another telltale.
